A Jeopardy! contestant has opened up about his crushing defeat and admitted he suffered a ‘silly brain fart.’

Fans were gripped on the recent finals, and were shocked when Dave Widmayer flopped out at the final rounds of the hit game show. They flocked to Reddit to comment when the results of the show hosted by Ken Jennings were revealed.

Surprisingly Dave replied and got stuck in with the conversation. One fan wrote, “Dave clearly had a silly brain fart… I’m so crushed for him. :(“. Dave replied, “I sure did. I spent a while trying to think of a Thanksgiving/Christmas movie from the 90s. Maybe a romcom or something.

“Jack Skellington’s face finally pops into my head, and I hear the music move to the second part. Now I’m panicking and rushing to write down my answer. I only realized my mistake once it was time to drop our pens. I can take some solace in folks knowing that I knew the answer. Even if my all-time FJ record is 0/4. Congrats to Pete. I hope he keeps going through the CWC!”

The final round for the two-part Second Chance Tournament on Friday saw the return of teacher Eugene Huang from Paramus, New Jersey, trivia host Dave Widmayer from Portland, Oregon, and filmmaker and educator Pete Johnston, originally from Alma, Michigan, as they vied for a spot in the Champions Wildcard.

In the category of “Movie Inspirations,” the question was: “A store’s mingling of displays of 2 different holidays inspired a poem & years later, a 1990s film with this name.”

Johnston answered correctly with, “What is The Nightmare before Christmas ? Hi Mom & Dad!!” He wagered $8,401, bringing his total to $26,800 and giving him the lead. Huang also answered correctly with “What is The Nightmare Before Christmas?,” adding $8,600 to his total, bringing his tally to $19,800. But did Widmayer get it?

In a surprise fumble, Widmayer answered, “What is The Nightmare Before Halloween? Go Birds!” With a wager of $13,400, his new total was now $11,599, giving him the third-place spot and making Pete Johnston the surprise Tournament champion, allowing him to advance to the 2026 Champions Wildcard tournament.

Meanwhile just earlier this month Jeopardy! fans took a jab at President Donald Trump when contestants were asked who the “worst president” is.

On Monday, December 15, the show continued its’ Second Chance tournament with returning contestants Eugene Huang, Erin Li and Erik Nielsen. In the middle of the segment, viewers shifted their focus momentarily off the players and over to one of the interesting clues of Double Jeopardy.

Their murmurs began shortly after Nielsen had asked host Ken to reveal the $400 slot of a category titled, “I’m Thinking of a James…,” which gives clues related to public figures named James.

Jennings announced, “According to the U.S. News & World Report, this person is considered the “worst president” in U.S. history.”

Without a second of hesitation, Nielsen responded, “Who is James Buchanan?”

The 15th president has earned the title as the “worst president” due to his pro-Southern bias and repeated failures of leadership, which left his successor, Abraham Lincoln, with a divided country.
