From 3rd division football to Euros call-up in ONE year – the curious case of Fermin Lopez

Just a year ago, Fermin Lopez was plying his trade in Spain’s third division. Barcelona had sent the young midfielder on loan to Linares. Fermin had a pretty solid campaign, netting 16 goals in 40 games for the Andalusian side.

That’s when Xavi turned his attention to him, taking the player on board to the States – and he did not disappoint. In one of the first matches of pre-season, Fermin scored a rocket goal against none other than Real Madrid coming off the bench for the Catalans.

Further, his hard work paid off as he secured a spot in the first team for the season. He made his debut in La Liga and the Champions League – even earning the Man of the Match award in of the games, scored a goal in the away El Clasico and delivered a memorable celebration in front of a stand full of whites. He also finished the campaign as one of Barca’s best scorers with 11 goals.

Now, Fermin is heading to the Euros. All of this happened to the player within a year.

What’s his secret?

It’s his energetic style, versatility to play either in the middle or out wide, and his fearlessness in front of goal.

Also, it’s Xavi’s eye for talent and Fermin’s immense desire to prove himself that have shaped him into the player he is today.
