At just 16 years and 362 days old, Yamal surpassed the previous record held by Pele, who was 17 years and 244 days old when he played in the 1958 World Cup semi-finals.

By breaking Pele’s long-standing record, Yamal has cemented his place as one of football’s brightest young talents.

Adding to this incredible achievement, Yamal also became the youngest player to score in a European Championship. This record was previously held by Johan Vonlanthen, who found the net at 18 years and 141 days old during Euro 2004.

Throughout the tournament, Yamal had been edging closer to this milestone, and his moment finally came during the semi-final against France.

The historic moment occurred in the 21st minute of the match. With Spain trailing 0-1 after France’s Randal Kolo Muani scored in the 8th minute, Yamal unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The ball soared into the top corner of the net, leaving France’s goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, with no chance to save it.

Beyond his record-breaking goal, Yamal’s overall performance in the tournament has been outstanding. He is currently the top assist provider in the competition, having delivered three assists in five games.

One of his notable assists came in the quarter-final match against Germany, where he set up Dani Olmo’s opening goal with a brilliant pass.

Records after records

By tallying three assists in this edition of the Euros, Yamal has matched the records of illustrious players like Cesc Fabregas (2008), David Silva (2012), and Dani Olmo (2020).

Despite this impressive feat, Yamal faces stiff competition from other players, such as Fabian, Dani Olmo, Xavi Simons, and Nathan Ake, who are also vying for the top assist spot with two assists each.

Yamal’s performances at Euro 2024 have showcased his immense talent and potential. At just 16, he is already making a significant impact on the international stage, proving himself to be one of football’s most promising young stars.

His achievements in this tournament are a testament to his skill, determination, and bright future in the sport.
