News that Keanu Reeves would play Shadow was first revealed on The John Campea Show and was quickly corroborated by The Hollywood Reporter. The reports come shortly after some new Sonic the Hedgehog 3 footage debuted at CinemaCon 2024, revealing a major confrontation between Sonic and his teammates on one side, and Shadow on the other.

Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in the 2001 game Sonic Adventure 2 as an antihero, often serving as a rival to Sonic himself. Shadow also frequently uses guns in his appearances in the games, a notable departure from the humor and lack of seriousness of much of the series. Shadow’s appearance in the cinematic universe was first teased in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and was firmly confirmed by a visual teaser for the upcoming film
