‘Law & Order: SVU’ Cast Reacts to Mariska Hargitay Sexual Assault Revelation
On Tuesday night, the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit gathered in New York City to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary. The event was marked by heartfelt tributes and reflections, particularly surrounding Mariska Hargitay, the series’ enduring star, who recently made headlines with a deeply personal essay.
Hargitay’s co-stars shared their admiration for her courage and vulnerability in a recent editorial for People magazine, where she revealed a harrowing experience of sexual assault by a former friend in her 30s. The candid piece has resonated widely, and her colleagues had much to say about her bravery.
Christopher Meloni, who starred as Detective Elliot Stabler opposite Hargitay’s Olivia Benson, praised her openness. “When I first heard the story, it took me aback,” Meloni told ET’s Rachel Smith. “I was amazed by her bravery. She shared her personal experience with clarity, grace, and deep thought, aiming for a broader impact. Her bravery is reflected in everything she does.”
Meloni emphasized that the show’s success is due in no small part to Hargitay’s unwavering commitment. “She has been the core member, striking a chord with the public despite changes in writers and actors,” he said.
Ice-T, who plays Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, admitted he was taken by surprise when he first learned about Hargitay’s editorial. “I told her, ‘I’m really lost for words. I don’t know what to say.’ It’s powerful for her to speak out, and I respect that she’ll share more when she’s ready,” he said, acknowledging the profound impact of her revelation.
Dann Florek, who portrayed Capt. Donald Cragen, reflected on the newfound depth this revelation adds to Hargitay’s role. “She is the heartbeat and soul of this show. Understanding the personal struggles she has faced only underscores why she has been, and remains, so extraordinary.”
Peter Scanavino, who plays Assistant District Attorney Dominick “Sonny” Carisi, Jr., emphasized the supportive atmosphere among the cast. “We just try to give her all the love and comfort she deserves,” Scanavino said. “Her honesty is inspiring. If she can be that open, I hope it encourages others to be honest with themselves as well.”
Hargitay herself spoke to ET with deep gratitude for her colleagues and the show’s team. “There’s a lot of love and respect among everyone involved in this show,” she said. “It feels like family, and I’m privileged to work with such an intimate and supportive group of people.”
As the SVU family celebrated the show’s milestone, it was clear that the bond between them extends far beyond the screen, solidified by shared respect, admiration, and a commitment to supporting one another through both professional and personal challenges.
