Messi’s super record is about to be broken at Copa America

Former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez is set to break Lionel Messi’s record after his incredible form at Copa America 2024.

Former Real Madrid player James Rodriguez provided three assists in the group stage, helping Colombia to a 1-1 draw with Brazil in their final group game. Colombia then beat Panama 5-0 in the quarter-finals, with James Rodriguez scoring a goal and adding two assists in the process.

This now puts him level with Lionel Messi’s record of five assists in a Copa America. While the Argentine legend set the record in the 2021 Copa America, James Rodriguez appears to be on the verge of breaking that mark.

Los Cafeteros face a tough semi-final against title favourites Uruguay in their next match on July 11. If they can beat their strong opponents, a place in the final will be assured for a clash with either Argentina or Lionel Messi’s Canada. In the meantime, however, James Rodriguez is expected to provide an assist against Uruguay and break Messi’s record.

Despite leaving European football, the midfielder has regained his top form with the Colombian national team at the Copa America. With such a high form, James Rodriguez and his teammates have every right to dream of winning the championship trophy.

James Rodriguez was once highly anticipated at Real Madrid, but his career at Los Blancos has not really lived up to fans’ expectations. He has not often played a key role in the Royal Club’s midfield. The 32-year-old left the Santiago Bernabeu in 2020, spending a year at Everton, Al-Rayyan and Olympiacos.

Currently, the Colombian captain plays for São Paulo in the Brazilian National Championship.
