Patrick Mahomes shares telling reaction as Klay Thompson signs with Dallas Mavericks

Mahomes applauded the Mavericks' signing of Thompson

Famous Dallas sports enthusiast Patrick Mahomes tweeted his support on Monday as the Mavericks landed a prized third scoring option in Klay Thompson from Golden State

Patrick Mahomes thinks Klay Thompson looks right at home in a Mavericks uniform after the shooting guard’s high-profile exit from Golden State.

Thompson arrived in Dallas on a 3-year, $50 million contract on Monday after earning five All-Star appearances in 11 seasons with the Warriors. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and unabashed Dallas sports fan signaled his support for the move by quote-tweeting the announcement with three flexed bicep emojis.

Mahomes grew up in Tyler, Texas, a city of 100,000 people about 90 miles east of Dallas and a short drive from his father’s hometown of Lindale. The elder Mahomes enjoyed an 11-year career in the MLB, including a brief stint with the nearby Rangers, but made sure to indoctrinate his son into the Texan state religion of football.

Growing up in Texas, I was a big Dallas Cowboys fan, and my dad was a big Cowboys fan,” Mahomes told the Dallas Morning News in 2017. “I watched Romo every week of the season for his whole career. He’s a great quarterback, a guy who has a ton of comeback victories.”

The 6’2 gunslinger was lightly recruited out of Whitehouse High School despite totaling more than 5,500 all-purpose yards and 50 passing touchdowns his senior season, committing to Texas Tech over offers from fellow instate programs Houston and Rice — he was also selected in the MLB Draft’s 37th round that summer but declined to sign a contract.

Mahomes’ draft stock soared after grabbing the reins in Lubbock halfway through his freshman season, however, overcoming a mediocre Red Raider roster to lead all FBS quarterbacks in passing yards by 2016 and even earning the attention of his beloved Cowboys.

“They used to play Baylor every year when he was at Texas Tech at the end of the season and it was always at AT&T stadium,” Mahomes Sr. told FOX4. “When he would get there Tony Romo and Jerry Jones would always leave a note and tell him that he was going to be a future Cowboy.”

Mahomes was selected 10th overall by Kansas City in the 2017 NFL Draft and has since brought three Lombardi trophies back to Arrowhead Stadium. This serial success makes Jones’ promise now appear unlikely and complicates his lifelong Dallas football fandom. “I’m from around that area, my dad was a big Dallas Cowboys fan,” Mahomes told reporters before hosting Dallas in 2021. “But I certainly won’t be one today.”

The Chiefs are one of just two Kansas City franchises in America’s four major sports divisions, allowing Mahomes to express his hometown NBA and NHL allegiances without much controversy. The two-time MVP became a familiar courtside presence during the Mavericks’ postseason this season, receiving a signed jersey from star point guard Luka Doncic and even narrating an NBA Finals hype video for the franchise.
