For the second time this year, Patrick Mahomes has gone back-to-back on major awards.

On Thursday, July 11, Mahomes, 28, was named the Best Athlete in Men’s Sports at the 2024 ESPYs, his second consecutive earning the award show’s biggest honor.

While the NFL quarterback wasn’t present to accept the honor at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, Calif., Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid proudly spoke on his behalf.

“Listen, I am honored to be here, to pick up this award for Patrick,” the coach, 66, began. “I’ve been around this kid for two years now, and to watch him grow as a football player, as a teammate, as a leader has been phenomenal.”

Reid added that he’s also had the opportunity to watch Mahomes, who shares daughter Sterling Sky, 3, and son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon III, 19 months, with wife Brittany Mahomes, “grow as a father and as a husband.”

According to Reid, that’s been the “best part” of knowing the football star.

He wrapped up his acceptance speech by saying that while the National Football League might be “very lucky” to have Patrick, it’s Kansas City that appreciates “all that he does” the most.

The accolade comes just months after the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was named Super Bowl MVP two years in a row.

Alongside Mahomes, Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, golfer Scottie Scheffler and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers were nominated for the best male athlete award at the show.

Ohtani, 30, won the award in 2022.

The three-time Super Bowl winner was also nominated for this year’s best NFL player award. Mahomes won the category, which also had San Francisco 49er Christian McCaffrey, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett as nominees.

The Kansas City Chiefs were also nominated for the Best Team award at this year’s ESPYS.

In his acceptance speech for the award in 2023, Mahomes emphasized his gratitude to Chiefs fans for helping him and the team find success on the field.

“Chiefs Kingdom, I truly believe, is the best fan base in the world. We’re going to do this thing again, we’re going to keep this thing rolling. I appreciate all y’all,” he said during the show at the time.

Next, Mahomes will enjoy the last days of his offseason before the Chiefs return for mandatory training camp in Kansas City on July 21.
