Fans interestingly blamed Lionel Messi after Argentina played out a disappointing 2-2 draw against Morocco to begin their 2024 Paris Olympics campaign. La Albiceleste came from two goals behind to nick a very late draw in their tournament opener.

Argentine legend and 2008 Olympics Gold medalist Messi reportedly turned down an opportunity to feature in the Games in a bid to preserve his fitness.

Managed by Javier Mascherano, Argentina were firm favorites against Morocco, who won the under-23 AFCON to qualify for Olympics. The coach, who was reportedly recommended by Lionel Messi, had seen his team struggle at the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2023, getting eliminated from the Round of 16.

The Argentina U23 side did not have the magic of Lionel Messi with them in Saint-Etienne as they struggled against Morocco. The performance and result were deemed as unsatisfactory by some fans, who blamed Messi for backing Mascherano.

“A rare mistake from him,” a fan wrote.
