Revealed: how Athletic BIlbao threatened legal action against Barca for Nico Williams pursuit

Barcelona looks set to lose out on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams as the 2024 summer transfer window nears its end.

The Blaugrana had him as their priority summer target but financial issues stopped the deal from happening. As per El Correo, the Basque club also threatened action against Barca.

Their club president Jon Uriarte told La Liga president Javier Tebas that he wouldn’t sit back if the Blaugrana were able to activate Williams €58m release clause.

Athletic Bilbao are aware of Barca’s financial troubles and knew that they did not have the necessary funds to afford the winger.

They felt that the Blaugrana would’ve breached the La Liga salary limit if they tried signing Williams. As a result, Athletic were ready to get into a major conflict with Barca if they tried activating the player’s release clause.

The Basque club threatened legal action and could’ve gotten the Blaugrana into even more trouble. That is probably why Barca though against making a move for Williams.

Instead, the Blaugrana have signed Dani Olmo as their marquee summer signing and are trying to get a few more deals done before the transfer window closes.
