Former Canada international Kaylyn Kyle has delivered her verdict on whether Inter Miami can win the Leagues Cup without Lionel Messi. The footballer-turned-pundit believes the Herons have what it takes to go all the way and deliver the trophy in the absence of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Recall that Lionel Messi single-handedly guided Inter Miami to Leagues Cup glory last year. The Argentine icon contributed a whopping 10 goals and one assist in just seven games to ensure the club won the first trophy in their history.

The Argentine achieved another success with his national team this summer as he strolled to another Copa America triumph. However, that came at a cost as he picked up an ankle injury.

As a result, the Miamians won’t be able to count on him in this early phase of the new campaign. With the Leagues Cup set to return this weekend, question marks are being raised as to whether the club can retain the trophy, with their talisman on the sidelines.

Commenting on the subject, Kaylyn Kyle backed the Herons to replicate their success in the competition. The former Canada star is convinced the club has enough depth to cope without Lionel Messi.

“Without a doubt, it’s Inter Miami,” she told MLS’s official website (via Inter Miami News). “There are question marks about Lionel Messi and if he’ll be healthy and ready to go. But they have so much depth and so many key pieces that I think they’ll repeat.”

Inter Miami will play their opening game of the Leagues Cup versus Puebla this Saturday (July 27).

The Herons can expect another campaign of elite football from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. Fresh off leading his country to yet another triumph this summer, Lionel Messi still has the magic and ability to conquer more grounds.

However, the club shouldn’t expect much from the Argentine beyond the campaign. At 37, the former Barcelona superstar is already in the twilight of his career and retirement is just around the corner. The fact that he’s won it all could influence him to call time on his career much sooner than we anticipate.
