‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’ tops US box office

‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’ is leading the US box office, earning $21.8 million in its first week of release (from December 1), according to media research company Comscore.

Comscore said Beyoncé’s Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé marked the first time a film crossed the $20 million mark over a three-day weekend in early December since The Last Samurai (2003) opened at the same time (starring Tom Cruise).

“Historically, this is a ‘dead zone’ for the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “It’s like the weekend after a big holiday or the first weekend after the end of summer because there’s usually a lull. So I think it’s great that it’s doing so well.”

Similar to Taylor Swift ‘s concert film Taylor Swift : The Eras Tour , Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé gave fans the chance to don their fringe cowboy hats and enjoy the sights of the singer’s concert tour, even if they couldn’t get tickets to the mega-hit shows. Social media clips showed audiences around the world wearing silver, metallic outfits as they danced and sang along in packed theaters.

Live Nation reported that superstar Beyoncé’s 56-location Renaissance World Tour has earned more than $579 million worldwide – a lucrative haul, according to European economists.

Many critics praised the film for providing a behind-the-scenes look at the star’s first world tour since 2016, with frequent costume changes, spectacular choreography, “surreal” visuals and Beyonce’s “platinum” vocals.

Beyoncé, best known for her hit Flawless , was a member of Destiny’s Child and holds the record for most Grammy Awards with 32.

In addition to concert footage, the film offers a rare glimpse into how Beyoncé grapples with her roles as a star and mother. She also speaks candidly about the challenges and joys of being a hugely successful black woman in the music industry.

Although Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé’s box office revenue did not match Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ‘s $96 million opening weekend , Paul Dergarabedian commented: “There were more Beyoncé downloads because of the large number of fans going to the theater. Movie tickets are also much cheaper than concert tickets.
