Based on the Ken Bruen novel of the same name, the 2011 action thriller Blitz features the action legend as Detective Sergeant Tom Brant, a hot-headed and surly London officer who is forced to team up with the straight-laced acting inspector Porter Nash (Paddy Considine) after a dangerous serial killer begins targeting police officers in the city and brutally murdering them.

The two vastly different men must learn to work with one another and deal with the other’s temperaments as they race against the clock to catch the crazed killer known as “Blitz,” with Brant using his own questionable methods to hunt down the criminal.

Statham in Top-Tier Action Form

Upon its worldwide release, Blitz received a mixed bag response from critics, who praised the thriller for its savvy screenplay, wry humor, and Statham’s commanding performance, though felt that the pacing was jumbled and that it was a run-of-the-mill action flick. Blitz also starred familiar faces like Luke Evans and David Morrissey, and was a modest financial success, grossing $15.8 million at the box office.

Though the film was ultimately a straight-forward thriller, it nonetheless featured Statham doing what he does best and showcased his hand-to-hand combat skills and unparalleled physical prowess.

Statham appeared alongside Ryan Phillippe and Wesley Snipes when he headlined the 2005 action thriller Chaos, as hardened veteran Detective Quentin Conners who is partnered up with the rookie cop Shane Dekker (Phillippe) to handle a hostage situation at a Seattle bank, and is shocked when the thieves do not end up stealing a single dollar from the financial institution.

Snipes portrays master thief and hacker Lorenz, who begins to take out his accomplices one-by-one after unleashing a virus in the computer system and shares a surprising connection with Conners’ past.

A Straight-Forward Police Thriller

Chaos was shot in just 22 days and was a part of Statham’s two-picture deal with Franchise Pictures, and due to budgetary constraints the action flick’s script was heavily rewritten to coincide with the short production schedule.

Though perhaps not one of Statham’s most acclaimed projects, Chaos still proved to be an exhilarating ride for audiences and had plenty of twists and turns, with DVD Verdict writing in their review of the film, “Chaos may not redefine what’s possible in the police suspense thriller, but it’s satisfying and entertaining enough to earn a look-see by fans of the genre or anyone hankering for a decent, plot-twist-heavy actioner.”

The action superstar is also joined by André Benjamin, Mark Strong, and Vincent Pastore in the entertaining action film, with Ritchie lacing Revolver with references to Kabbalah and spiritualism, including numerological and symbolic elements.

The number 32 also comes up repeatedly throughout the movie, which, according to Ritchie, possesses mystical meanings; the popular director was heavily interested in the discipline during production and wanted to reflect his beliefs in it. Neither a major critical nor financial hit, Revolver still highlighted the chemistry between Statham and Ritchie and fans of the filmmaker will appreciate the philosophical themes presented in the screenplay.

When Bishop’s close confidante and mentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) is brutally murdered, he reluctantly agrees to train his old friend’s vengeance-seeking son Steve (Ben Foster), with the two vowing revenge for the crime.

Touting a stacked cast led by Benicio del Toro, Dennis Farina, Brad Pitt, and of course Statham himself, Guy Ritchie’s 2000 crime comedy Snatch was just the action star’s second acting endeavor and saw him work alongside Ritchie once again following the massive success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

The lauded film features two interconnected stories with one pertaining to the frantic search of an 86-carat diamond and the other focusing on illicit boxing promoter Turkish (Statham) as he is forced to fix a boxing match between bare-knuckle fighter Mickey (Pitt) and Gorgeous George, which spawns less-than-desirable results.

Statham Garners International Attention

Statham’s compelling performance as the smooth-operating Turkish helped him break into Hollywood and showcased his undeniable leading man quality to audiences all across the world. Snatch dominated the box office and grossed over $83 million on a modest $10 million budget, propelling both Statham and Ritchie’s respective careers and showing off the actor’s range on-screen.

The crime comedy has since gone on to attract a cult following and is currently featured in the IMDb’s top 250 rates films list, and in 2017 a television adaptation of the movie was released and ran for two seasons.

Statham once again reprised his role as notorious hitman Arthur Bishop for the 2016 sequel Mechanic: Resurrection, which picks up after the savvy killing machine faked his own death in the previous film and now lives a quiet life in retirement in Rio de Janeiro under the fake name Santos.

Bishop is forced to return to his old violent ways after an old adversary from his past (Sam Hazeldine) kidnaps the love of his life Gina Thornton (Jessica Alba) and forces him to carry out three extremely difficult assassinations, including a dangerous arms dealer (Tommy Lee Jones).

A Rip-Roaring Good Time

Watching Statham meticulously take out formidable foes on a noble quest to save his lady love thrilled fans everywhere, and in their glowing review of the installment, Variety commended Statham as action superstar and its exciting premise, calling it “a bite-sized Bond film, or maybe grittier homicidal knockoff of the Mission: Impossible series, with a lone wolf renegades as the entire team.”

When Jason Statham joined the adrenaline-pumping blockbuster franchise Fast & Furious, the celebrated superstar helped breathe new life into the enduring series similarly to when Dwayne Johnson did.

Statham reprised his role as former special forces soldier Deckard Shaw for 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, which follows Dominic Toretto as he is forced out of his relaxing retired life with his new wife Letty by the cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron), prompting his loyal team to hunt down Dom and take on the dangerous criminal before she unleashes chaos on the world.

Epic Blockbuster Extravaganza

Shaw returns after being imprisoned by Hobbs and the DSS and becomes an ally to the team as they fight back against Cypher and rescue Dom, with the elite group going on a globe-trotting mission to get the job done.

Unsurprisingly, The Fate of the Furious proved to be a major blockbuster hit and raked in a whopping $1.2 billion while earning praise for its thrilling action sequences and lively cast performances. The installment was nominated for two Saturn Awards and six Teen Choice Awards and proved that the car enthusiast franchise wasn’t losing any steam, with the success of The Fate of the Furious ultimately leading to 2 additional sequels and a spin-off starring Statham and Johnson.

A remake of the Georgian-French film 13 Tzameti, the 2010 psychological crime thriller 13 stars Statham, Mickey Rourke, Ray Winstone, and Sam Riley and tells the story of a naive, down-on-his-luck Vince who steals the identity of a recently deceased man who was about to start a lucrative job in order to pay for his father’s important surgeries.

Vince quickly realizes he may have bitten off more than he could chew as he is introduced to a complicated game of Russian roulette where wealthy men bet on who will come out alive and survive the deadly affair.

Statham Embraces His Villainous Side

Statham stars as affluent British man Jasper Bagges, who is fascinated by the game and gambles that his brother Ronald will survive the lethal tournament, watching with intense interest as competitors drop like flies. The remake of the psychological thriller features Statham in a more antagonistic role, and it was fun for audiences to see the actor switch things up and portray a greedy, power-hungry villain with no problems risking the lives of desperate men.

13 was unfavorably compared to the original picture, though the thriller nonetheless allowed Statham to shine in a diabolical performance and showcased his range.
