After a long period of silence, director Joss Whedon responded to accusations of mistreatment of actors on the sets of “Justice League” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
Entertainment Weekly reported that after months of silence, director Joss Whedon publicly addressed the accusations against him recently. On January 17, New York magazine published a long article written by Joss Whedon, sharing about the controversies that tarnished his reputation as a feminist and progressive ally. .
Whedon revealed that he had entered psychological treatment in recent years to cope with the complex trauma caused by his troubled childhood. Besides, the filmmaker also denied or downplayed the accusations made by Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher or Charisma Carpenter.

Actress Gal Gadot and co-star Ray Fisher accused Whedon of mistreating actors on the set of Justice League (2017). Actress Charisma Carpenter, who appeared in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin-off Angel , also accused the filmmaker of treating her badly.
‘Ray Fisher is a bad actor’
In the article, Whedon commented that he felt Ray Fisher did not do his job well. “We are talking about a malicious force. A bad actor in any scene he is in,” the filmmaker said of Fisher.
In Justice League , Fisher plays Cyborg – a half-human, half-machine superhero. In his version, Whedon cut out most of the character’s time with the comment “logically that plot will go nowhere”. The filmmaker also shared that he spent many hours sincerely discussing with Fisher about changes in the film.

After Whedon’s article was published, Ray Fisher shared a post on his personal Twitter account that hinted at the incident. The actor wrote: “Instead of mentioning the lies and travesties, I will spend today celebrating the legacy of the honorable Martin Luther King Jr.” January 17th is the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States.
Actor Ray Fisher – who once accused Joss Whedon of “bad, exploitative, unprofessional and completely unacceptable” behavior after replacing Zack Snyder as director of Justice League . The above accusation led to WarnerMedia opening an investigation into the film’s production process in 2021. However, the conclusion of the case was not publicly announced.
”Gal Gadot doesn’t speak English well”
In early 2021, actress Gal Gadot revealed that during her time playing Wonder Woman in Justice League , she was threatened by Joss Whedon to ruin her career. But from the director’s perspective, this is just a misunderstanding during the information exchange process.

“Gal Gadot’s native language is not English, and my speech tends to be gruff and unpleasant,” the filmmaker commented on Gadot’s interpretation of events. Whedon continued by giving the example of an ineffective communication situation on set that caused Gal Gadot to unfairly blame herself.
According to Whedon, Gal Gadot wanted him to cut a scene from the script. In response, he joked that even if she tied me to the tracks, right in front of a moving train, I wouldn’t give up. “Then people said I said something about her body, demanding to tie her to the train tracks,” Whedon said.
Gal Gadot responded to New York magazine about Whedon’s comment about not being fluent in English. The beauty said: “My listening comprehension skills are completely normal.”
