Euro 2024 Power Rankings

Study-ranks-every-team-in-the-last-16-of-Euro-2024-by-how-good-they-are-at-penalties

Euro 2024 has proven to be one of the most exciting international tournaments in recent memory. A year and a half on from an enthralling World Cup, some of the best players on the planet are pitted against each other in a competition that doesn’t necessarily have a clear favourite.

The quarter-finals of the tournament were incredibly close, with three of the four matches going to extra time at the very least. The tension is slowly building ahead of the semi-finals, though, considering the pedigree and talent that the final four remaining teams possess.

Having seen plenty of the final four teams already this summer, it’s become quite clear which sides are looking more likely to lift the silverware on July 14th than others. With that said, here are all four of the remaining Euro 2024 teams ranked by how likely they are to win the competition.

4Netherlands

Best Euro performance: Winners (1988)

Netherlands' Micky van de Ven

The Netherlands’ current squad is a confusing mix of experienced defenders like Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij as well as individualistic young forwards such as Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons. Wout Weghorst doesn’t fit the mould of his technically gifted compatriots, but proved to be integral once again for his nation with a winning goal off the bench in the tournament opener against Poland. But after a draw against France and a disappointing loss to Austria, the Dutch remain very difficult to predict.

Romania was a very favourable draw for the third-best team in Group D, and they put in their finest performance of the competition during that 3-0 win. They were then handed a tie against Turkey, and despite the initial scare of going 1-0 down, they came from behind to beat their opponents and progress to the semi-finals where they will meet England. On paper, they have a very talented team, but as we’ve already seen so far, you’re never quite sure which Oranje will turn up on the day.

3France

France came so close to claiming a second consecutive World Cup in Qatar, only to slip up at the final hurdle against Argentina on penalties – the cruellest way to lose a final. Still, they are behind only Argentina in the world rankings and are far from being a team that relies on Kylian Mbappe.

Serie A winner Marcus Thuram is a superb addition to the forward line, Antoine Griezmann is back to his best, and N’Golo Kante has managed to turn back the clock while in Saudi Arabia. Hell, William Saliba, one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs, has struggled to get a starting berth consistently until this competition. Les Bleus have not taken the tournament by storm just yet, failing to top their group thanks to a re-taken penalty by Robert Lewandowski, but there were encouraging signs against Belgium.

They only just got past Portugal, and haven’t looked very impressive at all throughout. They deserve their spot in the semi-finals, but Spain might just prove to be too much for France considering how they’ve looked so far, so don’t be too surprised if they don’t make it to the Euro 2024 final.

2England

Best Euro performance: Runners-up (2020)

England players

Gareth Southgate’s side are prone to tepid displays and have a shaky backline weakened further by the absence of Harry Maguire – which tells its own damning story. Add in three lacklustre performances in what was a relatively easy group, plus a ropey 2-1 win against Slovakia in the Round of 16, and a narrow penalty shootout victory over Switzerland and it’s hard to paper over the cracks which are becoming increasingly obvious in the Three Lions’ setup.

But while the attack hasn’t hit their stride yet, England have the talent to cause any team problems if they can click. Harry Kane remains one of the best centre-forwards in the world, Jude Bellingham is the brightest hotshot around who can pop up with late goals when it matters most, and other incredible talents like Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden add even further depth.

Although they haven’t looked too convincing yet, their run of fixtures up to now and the fact that they will avoid playing either France or Spain until the final means it’s understandable why they have such a good chance of reaching the biggest game of the tournament.

There have been very few star performers in Germany so far for the Three Lions.

1Spain

Best Euro performance: Winners (1964, 2008, 2012)

Fabian Ruiz celebrates in Spain 3-0 Croatia

Luis de la Fuente is overseeing a new-look Spain at Euro 2024. The blistering pace of Nico Williams and record-breaking 16-year-old Lamine Yamal give La Roja more cut and thrust than the possession-centric sides of recent years. After a run of 136 consecutive games at major tournaments, Spain recorded less than 50% possession in their group-stage opener against Croatia for the first time in 16 years. They won 3-0.

While there are problems within their setup, such as their lack of real firepower in the striker department, Spain were the only team at the tournament to win all three of their group games, an impressive achievement considering they had to play Italy and Croatia. Adding a brutal 4-1 thrashing against Georgia to their resume and their narrow victory over hosts Germany only underlined the fact that De la Fuente’s side have been the most convincing team by far compared to their peers.
