Pep: ‘Messi doesn’t care about the Ballon d’Or’

Man City head coach Pep Guardiola said he has never seen Lionel Messi trying to compete for the Ballon d’Or.

Messi still has a chance in this year’s Ballon d’Or race.

Messi still has a chance in this year’s Ballon d’Or race.

When asked by a Tyc Sports reporter about the possibility of Messi winning the 2024 Ballon d’Or if he wins the Copa America this summer, Pep Guardiola replied: “I have never seen Messi compete for the Ballon d’Or in my life. He only plays for the love of football and wins titles because he has talent.”

Former Barca coach revealed: “Messi is no longer interested in the Ballon d’Or and I don’t think he will attend the ceremony even if he is nominated.”

With Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr both not performing well in continental tournaments, Messi emerged as a candidate for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Before EURO 2024 and Copa America 2024 kicked off, the leading candidates in the 2024 Ballon d’Or race were Vinicius and Bellingham, after the duo won the Champions League and La Liga double with Real Madrid in the 2023/24 season.

Messi was not considered a strong contender for the individual award because he plays in the MLS. But the situation seems to have changed now, as Vinicius and Brazil were eliminated from the 2024 Copa America, while Bellingham played poorly with England.

If Messi wins the Copa America for the second consecutive time with Argentina, he will have the opportunity to enter the race for the Golden Ball. However, this can only happen if the other candidates also fade away at the end of EURO 2024.

The Times believes that the 2024 Ballon d’Or race will be the most unpredictable and open in the past 10 years. No candidate is truly outstanding and comprehensive compared to the rest.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or award ceremony will be held by France Football at the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris) next October.
