Why do Barca sign Dani Olmo instead of a defensive midfielder? 4 reasons
Many Barcelona fans wonder why the club stopped prioritising the signing of a defensive midfielder and went for Dani Olmo instead.
There seem to be several reasons behind this decision. Let us list them all.
1. Olmo was the priority for Hansi Flick
This according to multiple reports.
Expectedly, Barca’s new boss wants to have plenty of attacking options on his roster. Even though Olmo is generally considered an attacking midfielder, he could well move to right or left half-wings, so his place in the starting eleven shouldn’t be a problem for Flick.
2. Laporta apparently wanted Olmo too
Back in 2020 already, it was reported that Dani Olmo was the priority signing for all presidential candidates. Since then, the rumours about the Spaniard’s potential Barca comeback have emerged every year; in 2021, Barca reportedly agreed personal terms with the player, but the move didn’t materialise due to RB Leipzig’s unreachable demands.
3. This signing could make Lamine Yamal even happier
Following Pedri’s injury at the Euros, the wonderkid showed off his brilliant connection with Olmo, with the two also linking up for a huge opener against Germany in the quarterfinals.
Surrounding the 17-year-old with players he understands perfectly is something he truly deserves after such a fantastic season.
4. Flick impressed with what he has ‘at home’
The defensive midfield duo of Marc Casado and Marc Bernal reportedly surprised Hansi Flick in the pre-season, and both players are set to be part of the first team this campaign.
In his latest presser, the German made it clear he is delighted with the existing options, noting that there are also Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Gavi injured.
