Chris Meloni Was Skeptical About A Relationship With Olivia Benson In ‘SVU’

Law & Order: SVU has tantalized fans for years with the possibility of a romance between Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler. Recently, actor Chris Meloni shared his thoughts on whether such a relationship could actually happen.

Meloni and Mariska Hargitay, who plays Benson, recognized their chemistry from the moment they met. Their bond deepened quickly, even before their screen test, with Meloni recalling how he made Hargitay laugh with a story. This connection was pivotal, laying the foundation for a lasting friendship that spanned decades.

“When I first saw him, I thought, ‘That’s the guy,’” Hargitay told People. “It was deep, very fast. Meeting him was life-changing.”

Starting as partners on SVU, their characters evolved over time, leading many fans to ship Stabler and Benson as a couple. Meloni attributed this to their genuine affection, which the original showrunner recognized and the audience embraced.

“Our chemistry is undeniable,” Meloni told Parade. “The fans played a big role in pushing for that dynamic to be explored.”

Despite fan hopes for a Stabler-Benson romance, Meloni admitted he’s not enthusiastic about the idea. However, he remains open to it if the story dictates.

“Well, I don’t think so,” Meloni said. “But if the writers go there, I’d trust their vision.”

Meloni’s abrupt departure from SVU left their dynamic unresolved for years. His return in the spinoff Organized Crime reunited him with Hargitay’s Benson, culminating in a near-kiss that stirred emotions.

Initially planned as a full kiss, the scene was altered by showrunners, a decision Meloni and Hargitay disagreed with.

“To be honest, Chris and I felt it should go a certain way,” Hargitay revealed to Variety. “But Dick Wolf, as always, has the final say.”

Despite the near miss, the moment hinted at a potential romance brewing between Benson and Stabler. With SVU’s longevity, there’s ample time to explore this compelling subplot.

“Benson and Stabler share a deep bond,” Hargitay emphasized. “We’ve got plenty of time left to see where their journey takes them.”

Their ease and trust in each other made filming the intimate scene natural and enjoyable.

“After all these years, it felt right,” Hargitay said. “We focused on delivering a truthful performance.”
