Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel’s ‘Fast and Furious’ feud explained in 13 lucky photos
The Rock announced that his long-running “Fast & Furious” feud with Vin Diesel was over with a June 1 Instagram post that stated his lawman Luke Hobbs will return to the franchise for the next film. Peace at last. But how did we get here with the two superstars?Diesel (as Dom Toretto, left) and Johnson (as Hobbs, right) were acting in this tense scene from 2011’s “Fast Five.” But in reality, life was imitating art as the two alpha males butted heads offscreen, which spilled over filming 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious.” Here’s what happened.
Jaimie Trueblood, Universal Pictures There were no public problems at the end of the first movie, even if The Rock’s smile was a little fixed at the April 2011 premiere of “Fast Five” in Brazil.
Johnson (left) and Jason Statham (right) stole the movie with their chemistry, which led to their own “Furious” spinoff.
SCOTT GARFIELD/UNIVERSAL PICTURES After Johnson’s post, Diesel vowed to fans on Instagram: “I will tell you everything, everything.” But speaking to USA TODAY in 2017, Diesel said, “I don’t think the world really realizes how close we are, in a weird way. I think some things may be blown out of proportion.”
“It’s not always easy being an alpha. And it’s two alphas. Being an alpha is sometimes a pain in the (butt),” he said.
Diesel also expressed that Johnson is like family: “In my house, he’s Uncle Dwayne. … I protect the franchise. I protect everybody including Dwayne. I protected Dwayne more than he’ll ever know. And it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have to know. But he appreciates it. He knows it.
Universal Pictures Jason Statham and Johnson appeared in 2019’s “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” which made $750 million worldwide. None of the other main franchise players appeared in the action movie, including Diesel. The “Hobbs and Shaw” 2019 premiere in Hollywood. This is what a premiere looks like when The Rock and fellow leading man Jason Statham get along. All smiles.
Kevin Winter, Getty Images Diesel gathered his family for “F9,” which did not feature Statham or Johnson. But Statham appeared in a post-credits scene telegraphing a return to the franchise.
Universal Pictures In a June 2021 Men’s Health interview, Diesel said that “tough love” was at the root of his dispute with Johnson, suggesting the tension was enhanced to help their performances. “Not Fellini-esque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing. While promoting “Jungle Cruise” with Emily Blunt, USA TODAY asked Johnson about Diesel’s comments. He laughed and called them “Fellini-esque.
FRANK MASI In November 2021, Diesel extended an olive branch on Instagram asking Johnson to appear in “Furious 10.”
Diesel said he “swore” to the late Paul Walker he’d “manifest” the best finale. “I say this out of love … but you must show up,” Diesel wrote to Johnson. “Do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.
Courtesy Of Universal Pictures “My little brother Dwayne … the time has come,” 6-foot Diesel wrote to 6-foot-5 Johnson. “The world awaits the finale of Fast 10.”
Diesel added: “As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house. There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes … Legacy awaits.
The Rock slapped that back, saying: “This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly – and privately – that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return.Getty Images, Associated Press But Johnson ultimately appeared in a post-credit “Fast X” scene which strongly signaled a return. The Rock confirmed the news on Instagram. “Hobbs is back,” Johnson wrote. “Last summer @vindiesel and I put all the past behind us.
