Expert Reveals Why Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is ‘Most Likely to Improve’; But How?!

After losing its explosive nature last season, the reinforcements added to the Kansas City Chiefs offense could see quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ stats rebound.

While the Kansas City Chiefs were still good enough to win their second Super Bowl in a row and just their third in five seasons, their offense wasn’t nearly as effective.

From a 50,000-foot perspective, their offense ranked just 14th in points per game last season. However, as you zoom in closer, you see stats like the Chiefs leading the league in drops, 28, and a drop rate of 12 percent.

mahomes Include quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ seven yards per attempt, which is the worst of his career, and you can see why CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell believes the 28-year-old can improve.

“Naturally, Kansas City added depth to its receiver room this offseason by selecting Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who ran a record 4.21 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, 28th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and signing deep threat Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, a 2019 first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens,” Podell writes. “With those two on board in 2024, Mahomes’ deep passing game should return, leading to plenty of improvement.”

As crazy as it may sound, Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, two-time league MVP, and two-time NFL passing touchdown leader, has room for improvement. That isn’t to say that Mahomes had a bad season last year, as he still threw for 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns with 14 interceptions while completing 67.2 percent of his passes.

However, other than his completion percentage, Mahomes’ numbers dropped below the standard of play he set for himself in the three previous seasons.

But no need to worry, as Podell notes, as the Chiefs have seemingly confirmed this offseason that their supporting cast wasn’t what it once was last season. Outside of tight end Travis Kelce and rookie sensation Rashee Rice, Kansas City didn’t have a single receiver record over 500 yards. However, Justin Watson did come close at 460 yards.

Yet, now, with the additions of two speedsters, Worthy and Brown, the Chiefs’ passing game could be set to regain its explosive nature. And if that is the case, then a special season could be in store for Mahomes.
