He expressed his excitement about the deep emotional content of the script, describing it as “beautiful.” When asked if Barba’s return was motivated by a desire to reconnect with Benson, Esparza hinted at a deeper layer: “There’s definitely subtext in the script that it’s about Benson.” He noted that while Barba’s involvement in the Wheatley case created tension, it also highlighted the need for a character who could challenge Benson’s perspective.

Esparza reflected on Barba’s evolution, acknowledging that his character’s experiences, including the Wheatley case, made him more empathetic and emotionally available. “The guy who came in was ballsy and quite arrogant, but he became much more attuned to things because of his relationship with Olivia,” he explained.

Regarding the potential for Barba’s return in Season 24, Esparza revealed that no discussions had taken place yet.
