Law & Order: SVU Finale: Raúl Esparza on Benson, Barba and… Stabler? (‘Are We Suddenly in a Triangle Here?’)
The Season 23 finale of Law & Order: SVU left viewers reeling with its exploration of Olivia Benson’s love life, planting intriguing seeds involving former ADA Rafael Barba and the ever-absent Detective Elliot Stabler. As the episode unfolded, it became clear that Olivia’s personal turmoil might be more connected to these men than she’d like to admit.
In a revealing therapy session with Dr. Lindstrom, Olivia’s discontent was linked to unresolved anger towards Barba over his role in the Wheatley case. Dr. Lindstrom urged her to confront her feelings, suggesting that her idealized relationship with Stabler was blocking her from forming genuine connections. This poignant moment set the stage for the return of Rafael Barba, who appeared in a high-profile case that Rollins secured for him.
The true emotional climax came during a scene at Forlini’s, where Barba and Benson had a charged exchange. Reflecting on the fallout from the Wheatley trial, Barba challenged Olivia’s misplaced anger towards him compared to her feelings for Stabler. Their conversation was raw and revealing, with Barba stating, “I do know what it means to love someone unconditionally. When you’re ready to stop feeling betrayed by me, I’ll be here.” Benson’s response, “I miss you, too,” suggested unresolved feelings and left fans eager for more.
TVLine caught up with Esparza to get his take on the finale. He expressed his excitement about the deep emotional content of the script, describing it as “beautiful.” When asked if Barba’s return was motivated by a desire to reconnect with Benson, Esparza hinted at a deeper layer: “There’s definitely subtext in the script that it’s about Benson.” He noted that while Barba’s involvement in the Wheatley case created tension, it also highlighted the need for a character who could challenge Benson’s perspective.
Esparza reflected on Barba’s evolution, acknowledging that his character’s experiences, including the Wheatley case, made him more empathetic and emotionally available. “The guy who came in was ballsy and quite arrogant, but he became much more attuned to things because of his relationship with Olivia,” he explained.
Regarding the potential for Barba’s return in Season 24, Esparza revealed that no discussions had taken place yet. With Warren Leight stepping down as showrunner, the future of Barba’s character remains uncertain. Fans will have to stay tuned to see if the unresolved tension between Barba and Benson will come to a head in the next season.
