Padres’ Matt Waldron Reacts to Video of Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Throwing Knuckleball

Matt Waldron may be an under-the-radar name for many sports fans, but the best quarterback in the world is well aware of him.

So aware of him, in fact, that he is trying to learn one of his pitches.

Video of Patrick Mahomes winding up like a pitcher and throwing what appeared to be a knuckleball made the rounds on social media Wednesday, and the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback responded by saying he is trying to learn Waldron’s special pitch:

AJ Cassavell of MLB.com noted the San Diego Padres pitcher is a Chiefs fan who has attended games in the past.

“It’s kind of crazy,” Waldron said of Mahomes imitating him. “Like I’m living in a different universe.”

Mahomes is no stranger to pitching mechanics, as his father, Pat Mahomes, pitched in Major League Baseball from 1992-2003 for six different teams.

As for the knuckleball, Brent Maguire of MLB.com pointed out that Waldron is the only true knuckleballer throwing at the major league level in today’s game. He has thrown the pitch at a 37.6 percent rate, and it has worked to the tune of a 3.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 68 strikeouts across 69.1 innings in 13 starts this season.

As a Chiefs fan, he would surely be willing to teach his secrets to Mahomes during an off day as well.
