There was once a time in Formula One when Alpine secured double points every single race. In 2024, it has been a struggle for them. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, as F1 is not the most popular of sports in the U.S., well, Kansas City Chiefs superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce own a percentage of the BWT Alpine F1 team.

They became part owners and investors in the BWT Alpine F1 team, formerly known as Renault, in 2022. Since then, they have been actively involved in the team’s operations and have been instrumental in supporting the team as they look for growth and success.

Alpine is one of the more famous F1 teams of all time behind the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull. They have a rich history in the sport, with numerous championship wins and a reputation for producing top-tier drivers. But, that was when, the new age of Alpine seemed to struggle.

So far, the team has just five points on the season. The way the point system works in F1 is as follows: drivers 1-10 get points, with first place getting 25, second getting 18, third getting 15, fourth getting 12, fifth getting 10, sixth getting 8, seventh getting 6, eighth getting 4, ninth getting 2, and 10th getting 1. Out of the top 10 drivers, if any of them get the fastest lap time during a race, they get an extra point.

This system rewards consistent performance and encourages drivers to push for the fastest lap, even if they are not in the top positions. It’s a key factor in determining the overall standings and can make a significant difference in the outcome of a race or a season.

In this race, their two drivers, Esteban Ocon, and Pierre Gasly, finished with three points as they finished the race in ninth and 10th place. Ocon started in 18th and made up eight places, and Gasly started in 15th and made up six places.

So, while that is the most points they have scored all season in one race, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows after the race. Ocon was in eighth place with a few laps to go but was ordered to give his place up to his teammate.

“I am happy for the team to be able to score with both cars, but the order should be reversed on that occasion,” Ocon said after the race. “I got the instructions to let Pierre pass with two laps to go to catch Daniel [Ricciardo] who was two and a half seconds in front and too fast for us. So the call was nonsense.”

Ocon caused the team a good chunk of points in their last race by trying to overtake his teammate on a sharp turn, which saw him total his car on lap one. The team later announced that week that Ocon would not be back with the team in 2025.

“I’ve done my part of the job, which is being a team player. I’ve always respected the instructions I’ve been given. It’s always been the case and I’ve never done anything different in my career. “I’ve done my part of the job and not the team today, and it is very sad.” There is drama brewing right now for Alpine. However, after three successful point hauls in their last four races, it is clear that they are getting better, and that is all that matters. The thrilling Canadian Grand Prix surely made Mahomes and Kelce happy.
