Xavi’s plan to dispense of Lewandowski revealed – He only wanted one striker at Barca
If Barcelona had not sacked Xavi Hernandez as coach back in May, Robert Lewandowski would be packing his bags to leave the club today, that’s according to Javi Miguel of Diario AS.
Xavi was fed up with Lewandowski and wanted him sold this summer. The Spanish manager urged the club to sign a younger striker — the only name on his lips was that of Girona’s Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian finished as La Liga’s topscorer last season with 24 goals.
Unfortunately for Xavi, he never received any backing from the club over his stance on Lewandowski. Barca president Joan Laporta kicked strongly against the idea.
When Xavi gave a press conference claiming that Barca may not be able to compete against Real Madrid with their current squad, Laporta saw red and fired Xavi.
Ironically, Xavi’s replacement is a man who has worked closely with Lewandowski. The Polish striker scored 76 goals across two seasons and even won the Champions League under Hansi Flick at Bayern. Lewa might’ve won the Ballon d’Or in 2020 if Covid hadn’t forced everyone indoors.
