info

This is a sample listing from a fictional newsroom. There is no real vacancy and nowhere to send an application.

About the role

Tidewater Data Desk is a fictional data and verification unit. This sample listing illustrates a part-time fact-checking role on an election desk, where the work is to test claims against evidence and show readers how the verdict was reached.

Fact-checking depends on method. The best checkers make it easy for readers to follow their steps and decide for themselves.

What you will do

  • Select claims to check using the desk's criteria and record why each one was chosen.
  • Trace claims to primary sources such as official documents, datasets and recordings.
  • Write concise verdicts that explain the evidence, the method and any limits.
  • Keep a clear source trail so that every verdict can be reviewed by an editor.
  • Respond to reader challenges and corrections in line with the desk's policy.
  • Apply the same standard to every party and claim.

What we are looking for

  • Experience in research, reporting, library work or other evidence-focused roles.
  • A methodical approach and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain impartial and to explain your reasoning clearly.
  • Familiarity with online search techniques and basic image and video verification.
  • Comfort receiving criticism calmly, including from people who disagree with a verdict.

How the team works

The part-time role is remote and flexible. Checkers agree their weekly hours in advance, with extra time during busy periods. Every verdict is read by a second checker before it goes to an editor.

The desk holds a short weekly session to discuss tricky cases and share techniques.

New checkers are paired with an experienced colleague for their first month. They practise on archived claims, compare their verdicts with the originals and discuss any differences, so that the team's standard is learned by doing rather than by memo alone.

Pay and conditions

The illustrative hourly range is $34 to $42 for a part-time role. It was invented for this launch edition and is not based on real pay data.

A real listing should state expected hours per week, whether work is employment or contract and how corrections are handled. Adjustments for disability or other commitments are welcome to discuss.
