Book guests, write scripts and run the clock on live segments for a morning programme, working closely with the control room.

info

This is a sample listing from a fictional newsroom. There is no real vacancy and nowhere to send an application.

About the role

Northlight Broadcast Network is a fictional television network. This sample listing illustrates a segment producer role on a live morning programme: the person who makes sure a three-minute interview is booked, researched, scripted and ready when the red light goes on.

Segment producers are the connective tissue of live television. They talk to guests, brief presenters, watch the clock and adapt when something changes minutes before air.

What you will do

  • Pitch, research and book guests for segments across news, culture and everyday life.
  • Write briefing notes, questions and short scripts for presenters and make sure facts are verified.
  • Build and update the rundown, tracking the timing of each segment and the transitions between them.
  • Coordinate with the director, graphics team and control room before and during the live show.
  • Pre-interview guests, explain how the studio works and look after them on the day.
  • Review the programme afterwards and suggest improvements for the next edition.

What we are looking for

  • Experience producing live or near-live programming for television, radio or online video.
  • Strong writing skills and an ear for conversational scripts.
  • A well-organised approach to deadlines, with the ability to stay calm when plans change.
  • Good judgement about sourcing and balance when choosing guests.
  • Willingness to work early shifts as part of a rota.

How the team works

The morning team is imagined as a small, close group working a rota that begins well before dawn. A typical day starts with an editorial meeting, followed by guest confirmations, rehearsals and the live broadcast, and ends with a short review.

Because everything runs through the studio and control room, the role is on-site at the campus. Training on the studio systems is part of the onboarding in this sample listing.

Pay and conditions

The illustrative range for this role is $62,000 to $78,000 for a full-time position. It was written for this launch edition and is not data from any real network.

Early shifts are part of the job, and a real listing would explain how rotas are shared, how travel home is handled and what rest periods apply. Candidates who need adjustments to shift patterns for health or caring reasons are encouraged to say so.
